The Kanzelwand is a 2058 meter high mountain that runs across the border between Germany and Austria. Here you can ski in winter – on 36 kilometers of slopes – and hike in the warm months. The Burmiwasser adventure trail, for example, is a highlight for families, as various play stations line the path. The Alpsee and the panorama restaurant also invite you. You can get to the Kanzelwand with a cable car that goes from Riezlern.

4. Cultural walks

If you like to hear legends and stories from the region and don’t feel like going on long hiking tours in the mountains, you should try local tours through Riezlern, Hirschegg and Mittelberg and see atonement crosses, Walser houses or chapels. These contemporary witnesses also tell many stories.

5. Natural bridge basin holes (also Chesselöcher)

If you like waterfalls, you’ve come to the right place. There is a lot to see on the way over the Brennboden to the natural bridge – especially a lot of wet things. From thundering waterfalls to clear natural pools that are also slightly hidden. And when it really rains in summer, you can enjoy the so-called kettle holes. The tour along the Schwarzwasserbach also leads directly past the kettle holes. Thus, these tours are recommended for hot days, because there is enough cooling. The picturesque kettle holes (basins filled with water) were created by the millennia of grinding water masses.

The local lakes have a lot to offer. Some of the more than 25,000 lakes are bathing lakes, others are very cold, but offer idyllic spots to switch off. Eleven lakes that you should visit once.

Emerald green, turquoise or deep blue: there are more than 25,000 lakes in Austria. Most of them are crystal clear and of drinking water quality. For many people, the lakes are the destination of their summer vacation. “Swimming and bathing at the lakes are among the top holiday activities”, confirms Ulrike Rauch-Keschmann, company spokeswoman for Österreich Werbung.https://123helpme.me/ The combination of mountains and lakes is very popular – hiking in the morning and then swimming in the afternoon.

Not all lakes are the same

However, a lake is by no means the same as a lake. There are warm lakes like the Klopeiner See, the water temperature of which can reach 29 degrees in summer, and very refreshing lakes like the Achensee. There are small, lesser-known lakes and very popular lakes such as Wörther and Attersee. With 1,270 stagnant bodies of water, Carinthia is the state with the most lakes. The Carinthian lakes are considered warm and are therefore particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts. The lakes in the Salzkammergut, on the other hand, are much cooler and mostly framed by high mountains.

The largest lake in Austria is the Neusiedlersee, 77 percent of which is in Austria. The rest belong to Hungary. It is one of the largest steppe lakes in Europe. Since the area is very windy, sailors, surfers and kite surfers get their money’s worth here. Large lakes usually have a good infrastructure and many restaurants, the small ones often only have one snack station. With 25,000 lakes, the selection is huge, and there is certainly the right lake for every taste and holiday type.

The 11.6 kilometer long Weissensee is located near Hermagor at the foot of the Gailtal Alps. Only a small part is built on, the rest is under nature protection. There is also no continuous road along the lake shore. So if you want to go from the east to the west bank, it is best to take the ship. The area is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. In winter the lake becomes the largest natural ice surface in the Alps.

Achensee, Tyrol

The Achensee is the largest lake in Tyrol and one of the coldest bathing lakes in Austria. Even in summer, temperatures rarely reach 20 degrees. The lake is idyllically situated between the Karwendel Mountains and the Brandenberg Alps. There are several public bathing areas, some with pebble beaches. The lake is also popular with sailors, surfers, and kite surfers. There are also beautiful hiking tours of various levels of difficulty in the area.

Tieber See, Styria

Gravel was mined here until the mid-1980s. The former gravel pond north of Graz near Röthelstein has been used as a bathing pond since 1987. A third of the bank is constantly unused in order to maintain the water quality. Swimming is possible in the Tieber leisure center. There is also a diving school here, as well as volleyball, soccer and basketball courts.

Leopoldsteinersee, Styria

The Leopoldsteinersee is a few kilometers outside of Eisenerz at the foot of the Hochschwab. The lake is also quite fresh in summer, but it is ideal for cooling off after a hike. The path around the lake is almost flat and also suitable for families. On the way there are always small, idyllic bays for swimming.

Almsee, Upper Austria

This lake is just one of many beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut. It is located in Grünau in the Almtal. The area is under nature protection, so there are no water sports here, and the water is too cold for swimming. The lake with a view of the Dead Mountains is ideal for walking and switching off.

Turnersee, Carinthia

The Turnersee is located south of the Klopeiner See in St. Kanzian. The lake gets very warm in summer, the water temperature can reach up to 28 degrees. The area around the lake is also the habitat of some rare bird species. You can swim in several places around the lake in summer.

Langbathseen, Upper Austria

There are two Langbath lakes near Ebensee in the Salzkammergut: the Vorderen and the Hinteren. The 1.1 kilometer long Vordere Langbathsee, which can also be reached by car, is mainly used as a swimming lake. The Hintere See, however, is only accessible on foot. A simple promenade leads around the lakes. Along the way you will always find small bays for swimming. The lake is also popular with divers and in winter with ice skaters and curlingers.

Blindsee, Tyrol

This mountain lake is located below the Fernpass in Tyrol and can get up to 24 degrees in summer. A hiking trail leads around the lake. Stone beaches invite you to swim. From the lake you can even see the Zugspitze, only 16 kilometers away. Divers also appreciate the lake because of the visibility of up to 30 meters. The lake belongs to a hotel in Lermoos. The lake is freely accessible for swimmers; a permit is required for diving or fishing, which can be purchased at the hotel.

Steirersee, Styria

Maximum depth: 21 meters above sea level: 1,445 meters

The lake is located on the Tauplitz high plateau and can be reached in about an hour’s hike from the end of the Tauplitzalm toll road. However, the crystal clear water of the lake is also quite fresh in summer and therefore more suitable for a short refreshment after a hike than for extensive bathing. In the north of the lake is the Dead Mountains, in the east the Warscheneck.

Lunzer See, Lower Austria

Maximum depth: 34 meters above sea level: 608 meters

The Lunzer See is the only natural swimming lake in Lower Austria. It lies in a wonderful setting at the foot of the Dürrenstein. In the village of Lunz there is not only a seaside resort including a springboard but also electric and pedal boat rentals. Boat tours on the lake are also offered. From the Lunzer See, hikers can also visit the higher lakes, the Mitter and Obersee, on a circular hike of around five hours.

Seewaldsee, Vorarlberg

Maximum depth: 14 meters above sea level: 1,132 meters

The mountain lake is located in the middle of the Großes Walsertal biosphere reserve. Despite the high altitude, the lake is pleasantly warm in summer as it has no superficial tributaries. The lake can be reached on foot on an asphalt road in around 30 minutes from the parking lot. If that’s too far for you: In summer, a slow train drives from the parking lot to the lake. There is an inn by the lake.

Hotels in Austria have been able to reopen since May 29th. What changes for guests on vacation and why everyone in Leogang feels like cycling.

The rugged Leogang Steinberge rise up to 2,600 meters to the north of the village. In the south is Leogang’s local mountain, the Asitz. Ski area in winter, huge downhill park in summer and meeting place for the national and international bike scene.

In mid-March, the corona-related shutdown suddenly turned quiet in the Salzburg area. Hotels have been able to receive guests again since May 29th. Not all businesses opened again immediately. Some will not start the season until mid-June, others at the beginning of the summer holidays.

For the Herbst family, however, it quickly became clear: As soon as it is allowed, vacationers are warmly welcome again in the Riederalm. Junior boss Andrea Herbst felt “the whole situation was a shock at first, of course.” “We would have been fully booked at Easter and had to lock up from one day to the next.

Some innovations

For a long time, however, it was not clear when the time would come. The junior manager spent the first part of the shutdown at home with the family. Their oldest daughter is in elementary school, so homeschooling was the order of the day. At the same time, she actively sought contact with the guests who had already booked and offered to rebook or transfer the deposit back. The Herbst family has spent the past few weeks adapting the resort in accordance with the new regulations.

First of all: As a guest, you hardly notice the new features. A mask is currently required when checking in at the hotel. After that, everyone is free to choose whether they want to put them on in the hotel or not. The minimum distance to other people must be observed everywhere. The employees also wear a face mask, at the reception a Plexiglas pane separates employees and guests. And a bottle of disinfectant is given as a welcome gift. In the hotel itself there are dispensers on every corner anyway – but not all of them are new. “We’ve had some for a long time, especially in the play areas,” explains Andrea Herbst. “Because even before Corona, for example, hygiene was very important in the flu season to avoid infection.”

© Klemens König Photography The region has a variety of mountain bike trails for beginners and advanced

Small changes were also necessary in the restaurant. There is no longer the salad buffet in the evening, the salad is served instead. Andrea Herbst doesn’t necessarily see this as a disadvantage. Because for her and her husband, head chef Andreas Herbst, who was recently awarded two toques, regionality and sustainability play important roles. Meat, fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables come from selected farmers in the area. “The buffet always includes salads that are out of season and have to be imported. That is not the case,” says Andrea Herbst.

The all-clear for lovers of the breakfast buffet. It has not been abolished, just changed slightly. Egg dishes and omelets are served to order, the spreads and yoghurts are made available in portions in reusable glasses for removal, the fresh bread is cut by employees and not by the holidaymakers themselves. In addition, the panes of the buffet showcases have been lengthened to protect the food.

Bike park and adventure trail

Leogang is a sporty, family-oriented tourist destination that celebrities appreciate again and again. But unlike in Kitzbühel, 40 kilometers away, not to be seen, but to relax in the midst of the impressive mountains. And unlike in Saalbach, which lies on the south side of the Asitz and forms a ski region with the Leogang in winter, après-ski and parties do not play a major role here north of the mountain.

The Riederalm is only a few steps away from the valley station of the Asitz cable car. At the sight of the daring downhillers jetting down the mountain, the temptation of the adrenaline rush becomes so great that you want to try it yourself by the second day at the latest. The bike park is one of the largest and most famous in Europe. There are numerous trails for beginners and professionals that come regularly. From October 7th to 11th, after 2012, the Mountain Bike World Championship will take place here for the second time.

The routes with names such as “Flying Gangster” or “Speedster”, which have a gradient of up to over 70 percent over loose scree as well as over rhizomes, contain tight curves and jumps, should be left to the professionals.

© Christine Lugmayr My tip: Attend a course and become a downhiller yourself. The protective equipment alone gives a feeling of speed – even if it is difficult to take your fingers off the brakes downhill

Conveniently, there is a bike rental and a bike school in the valley station.
